These are gross figures. Side rails, center supports and lift hardware take a share, so treat the usable volume as somewhat lower, and ask your designer for the internal dimensions of the design you are considering.

The three ways a storage bed opens
Every storage bed uses one of three access methods. Each suits a different bedroom and a different way of using the space.
Gas-lift beds (often sold as hydraulic beds)
The mattress platform is hinged at the head or the side and held open by gas struts, so the whole compartment is exposed at once. In the UAE these are widely advertised as hydraulic beds, although most use gas struts rather than true hydraulics.
Gas-lift beds give the largest single compartment and suit bulky items such as duvets and suitcases. The struts must be matched to the weight of the mattress: too weak and the platform is heavy to lift; too strong and it will not stay closed without effort.
Drawer beds
Drawers run out from the sides or foot of the base. You reach everyday items without moving the mattress, which suits things you use weekly, such as spare linen or folded clothes.
The trade-off is floor space. Each drawer needs its full depth clear beside the bed, plus room to stand, so drawer beds work poorly where the bed sits close to a wall or a wardrobe door.
Motorized lift beds
A motor raises the platform at the press of a remote control. There is no strut to balance against the mattress weight, so opening takes no effort, which suits anyone who finds lifting a heavy mattress difficult.
A motorized bed needs a power socket near the base. Before ordering, ask how the lift behaves if something is in the way, and how it can be lowered during a power cut.

Choosing the right design for your bedroom
Once the opening method is clear, a handful of practical details decide whether the bed is easy to live with.
Which side opens. A gas-lift or motorized platform can lift from the foot or from one side. Foot-lifting suits beds with a headboard against the wall; side-lifting suits wider rooms where the foot of the bed faces a wardrobe.

Base height and floor clearance. A base that sits flat to the floor maximizes storage and keeps dust out of the compartment. A raised design on furniture legs is easier to clean under but gives up storage depth. Decide which matters more before choosing the frame.

The mattress. Share the mattress size, depth and approximate weight with your designer. It determines the lift specification on a gas-lift bed and the load on a motorized one.
Children and pets. A lifting platform is heavy. Choose struts or a motor that lower it under control rather than letting it fall, keep the lid closed when you are not loading the compartment, and teach children that the space under the bed is not a hiding place.
Internal organization. A single open compartment fills up quickly. Dividers, or baskets and boxes that keep stored items sorted, make it easier to find one thing without emptying everything.
Keeping stored items fresh in Gulf humidity
Under-bed storage is enclosed and close to the floor, which is exactly where a humid summer can cause problems if the compartment is sealed with damp air inside.
Five habits keep the compartment fresh:
- Store only dry items. Bedding put away slightly damp after washing is the most common cause of musty smells under a bed.

- Open the compartment occasionally. Airing it for a few minutes when you change the bedding refreshes the air inside.
Some things are better kept elsewhere. Leather bags, shoes and important paperwork react to trapped moisture before textiles do, so a ventilated wardrobe shelf suits them better than a closed compartment near the floor. Anything you need more than once a month also belongs somewhere you can reach without lifting the mattress.

How much can I store under a double storage bed?
A 160 × 200 cm base with a 30 cm deep compartment has a gross volume of about 960 liters. Frame rails, supports and lift hardware reduce that, so the usable space is lower.
